CALLY AND LUELLA took turns sitting with Kevin. In the late afternoon his fever shot up to 104 degrees, but they got it back down with rubbing alcohol and cool sponge baths. He still hadn’t woken up, and that worried her. Bay had said it could be several hours before Kevin regained consciousness. The only positive thing about any of this was that she now had something to keep her mind off Harris.

All day she’d vacillated between trying not to think of her son and wishing Marcus would appear with him. She knew better than to expect him simply to drive up with Harris, but she’d hoped to have some word by now. As afternoon turned to evening, hope faded with the light.

At nine o’clock they served dinner to the men, or rather, Bay served dinner. He’d vowed earlier that neither Luella nor Cally would wait on them. Cally was washing dishes when Peter Sams came and said Gregor wanted to see her.

Her pulse quickened as she walked past the baby grand piano into the darkened library. One desk lamp shone in the oak-paneled room, casting eerie shadows on the wall and hiding Gregor’s eyes. Pinpricks of sweat broke out on her upper lip.

“Mrs. Burnett, we’ll be leaving River Trace shortly. I want to thank you for your hospitality.”

He laughed that ugly, rasping sound she had grown to hate in the past twenty-four hours.

“I’m glad you’ve enjoyed yourself.”

As soon as she spoke, Cally remembered Marcus’s caution not to antagonize the man. But Gregor went on as though he hadn’t noticed her sarcasm.

“It’s certainly been entertaining. Although not as stimulating as I might have hoped,” he said.

Narrowing her eyes, Cally lifted her chin. She knew what he was implying from Marcus’s warning.

“Oh, Mrs. Burnett, don’t be concerned. While I might have the inclination, I simply don’t have the time.”

She didn’t relax her pose but felt some of the tension ease in her back. Gregor smiled. She still couldn’t see his eyes, but she could hear the cruelty in his voice.

“All the same, I’d like to make the time later,” he added.

Her chest tightened; she squared her shoulders. He was toying with her—just playing cat and mouse. Even that knowledge didn’t stop fear from shimmying down her spine.

I refuse to let him know he’s scaring me.

With startling clarity, she realized he relished using the polished, cosmopolitan gentleman’s veneer as a weapon of intimidation. She glared defiantly at his shadowed face, knowing her stance was a sham.

She would do whatever Gregor asked to save Harris. She’d proven what she was capable of last night in the nursery with Marcus. Still, something deep in her gut twisted at the thought of comparing what had happened there to what was happening here. Now.

“Hmm, no curiosity. That’s not like you. Although, I don’t suppose I actually know you all that well. On the other hand, Marcus certainly seems to know you—or would like to.”

She blinked but didn’t answer. She fervently hoped Gregor would tire of his game, tell her whatever it was he had to say and leave.
